Last weekend we had our first outdoor happy hour with some friends and just like every year, once the sun goes down the mosquitos come out.  And, just like every year, I light up my citronella candles only to be baffled by why they don’t seem to work.

Then, just this week, I realized that the candles I bought didn’t repel the mosquitos for a very obvious reason.  They were citronella, after all.  They touted mosquito repelling qualifiers on the packaging, but one very important factor was missing.

Instead of containing citronella oil (which is the main deterrent of the prehistoric pests) the candles just were citronella ‘scented’.  Big difference.  It’s the essential oil in the candle that is responsible for keeping insects at bay, not the scent.

Here we look at several citronella collars at different price points. These spray collars provide a very gentle option, especially when compared to shock collars for anti-bark training which can come with risk of high discomfort, or even pain to your dog.

A spray collar, on the other hand, causes no harm or fear to a barking canine. For many people, citronella spray collars have brought much needed relief for the problem of a constantly barking dog! However, these collars are not a cure for barking.

They are a tool that can be used in conjunction with other training methods in order to adapt your dog to new behaviors that don’t include excessively barking. As the Australian Veterinarian Association states, if a spray collar is to be used it should always be done so “in combination with other therapies that may address the underlying motivation for the behaviour” . This includes strategies such as regular and consistent behavior modification training.
